Be right. A lot.

Writer: Niki SkeneNiki Skene

Yes. If you want to be ahead of the game, you have to be.

In an exponential era, work is turning into a paid MBA program. Companies that don’t inspire their employees will eventually lose their best talent. Leaders who are not right, a lot - will not find followers. Those who are nervous will very unlikely keep a clear vision and eventually make decisions that can become costly.

What an unpleasant introduction, sounds like a lot of bad news.

I don’t think at all that this is about bad news. Because we live in an era where all of the above can actually be achieved by everyone who has the drive and consequence to follow through.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Never been.

It is the 2ndh year of Inspiration Tours after the COVID lockdowns, and I am currently writing from the 27th floor of the Sohohouse in Hongkong. The 1st day of the Hongkong inspiration tour is a wrap and it became clear to me that some guiding principles are very likely going to separate leaders from followers.

  • A plan does make a difference.

Alibaba has a 100 years plan. If your response is “this is scary”, you should reconsider your relationship with planning. I am intrigued by the Chinese proverb, “If you do not know where you are going, any road will bring you there”

  • Stay away from the 1st row, if you tend to get cold feet.

Not one possible event, where a calm reaction will always outtrump a nervous response.

  • Be right. A lot.

Coming from a family of strong opinions, learning that listening is always better than speaking and trying to be the dumbest person in the room is often a smart choice, I realized that all of the above caters to eventually knowing better than most of the people around you. And knowing better is not a result of opinion, it is a result of learning, unlearning, relearning. Of observing and of going places (you cannot download experience)

  • Get out there. Go places.

Endorse the “Theory of Liminality”. We live in a place between the places. The era between the last and the next era. A short window open. In the subtle silence (not at all silent, depending on where you put your ears), the foundation of a whole new world is in the making.

Never more than now, I felt like these Inspiration Tours in Silicon Valley and other innovation hubs have their place in education future fit leaders. These conversations are not only addictive, but they are also fueling.
